Environment for Living
August 25‑26, 2021, Nizhny Novgorod

The quality of the urban environment, its comfort, safety, and activity are unthinkable without the rational use of water resources. Rivers and lakes have always been important for cities as transportation ways, sources of fresh water and energy, and their shores have always been recreational spaces for citizens. Today the understanding of the value of water resources is becoming more and more complex. Cities are looking for new ways to interact with water resources through the creation of sustainable landscapes and green corridors, giving equal rights to the water and urban elements. This problematic is especially urgent for Russia, as 70% of cities in the country with 85 million citizens are located near rivers, lakes or seas, but only 10% of the shoreline of these water areas are accessible and reconstructed as leisure areas. This is a huge challenge and at the same time a huge potential for development.

The topic requires thoughtful action at different levels at once: the region, the city, and the specific place. Such work should be based on the complex analysis of all aspects of urban development and on the cooperation between citizens, experts, representatives of business, and authorities. The V Environment for Living Forum will be dedicated to the best practices in this process.

The design of urban landscapes based on water and green resources will be considered at the state, regional, city and district levels. The participants will share the experience in developing the coastal zones and discuss the first results of implementing the law on integrated urban development. Special attention will be paid to attracting private investments in the development of Russian cities.

The anniversary V Forum will be different from the previous ones. The past events were dedicated to the principles, goals and tasks of strategic planning of the urban environment. In 2021, the Environment for Living Forum will be more focused on the practice, mechanisms and tools of real changes. It will bring together Russian and foreign experts and practitioners, from architects and developers to representatives of international organizations and different levels of government.

The Forum will be held in Nizhny Novgorod, which stands at the confluence of Oka and Volga rivers, and the history of the city is inseparably connected with these great rivers. In the year of its 800th anniversary, Nizhny Novgorod is undergoing a major transformation and is rediscovering its river front. Perhaps there is no better place in Russia today to discuss the relationship between the city and water.

Part of the business program of the forum will be the «City and Water» exhibition, dedicated to the DOM.RF projects. The participants of the event will be able to get acquainted with the interactive research about the perspective embankments, to see new projects of water and green development from different Russian cities. The forum partners, including the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Utilities of the Russian Federation, the Federal Agency for Tourism (Rostourism), the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment of the Russian Federation and the representatives of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, will also present their stands on the platform.

Living Environment:
All About Housing (2018)

On May 18 and 19 2018 a yearly forum «Living Environment: All about Housing» took place in Kaliningrad. It was organized by Ministry of Construction and DOM.RF with the support from the Russian Government and the Government of the Kaliningrad region. Strelka Institute of Media, Architecture and Design oversaw the program management.

Participants discussed challenges facing the construction industry today – in particular, they spoke about how to move from quantity to quality in housing indexes and form an urban environment that is comfortable for everyone.

The Kaliningrad forum was divided into two blocks: business program for government officials, entrepreneurs and experts in urban planning and «Urban Weekend», open to citizens.

800 participants attended the business program. Among them were representatives of federal and regional authorities from 51 Russian regions, architects, developers and experts in residential environment. Over four sessions they discussed how housing construction stimulates urban development and what should the high-quality and affordable housing in the XXI century be like.

The Governor of the Kaliningrad region Anton Alikhanov opened the forum. According to him, the forum was an important event for the region: «Thanks to the forum we can get a diverse view on the further development of regions from the best Russian and international experts in urban planning and architecture».

Invited speakers included some celebrities of the architectural world – the founder of the MVRDV studio Wini Maas (Netherlands), senior development consultant at MBL Housing and Development Inc Jeffrey Morgan (USA) and partner at Cityförster architecture+urbanism Martin Sobota.

One of the main results of the forum was the launch of the educational program for professionals in architecture and urban construction ARCHITECTS.RF. It is a free educational program aimed at raising domestic professionals and providing Russian cities with qualified personnel.

Also, within the framework of the forum, the winners of the Open International Competition of Architectural Concepts for Standard Housing in Russia were awarded. Grupo H (Slovenia), ESHER LLC (Russia), T.A.R.I-Architects (Italy), COMRADE ARCHITECTS LLC (Russia) and architectural bureau PLAN_B (Russia) took the first places. Each winner of the contest received a prize of 2 million rubles. The prize fund for other finalists was from 1 to 1,5 million rubles.

The «Urban Weekend» festival offered a new look at the potential of the region and the city for its residents. Apart from lectures and workshops, the program included a big picnic with gastronomy projects from all over Russia, tours to non-touristic parts of Kaliningrad organized by the locals, lectures from the ambassadors of the city changes, an open-air concert and a night market. Overall, two days accommodated 20 events.
